Corpus of Adjective-Adverbs in Southern Varieties of Italy: It_A_aaif

This corpus compiles over 800 examples of adjective-adverbs in four regional varieties of Southern Italy. The dialectal data from Sicilia (130 examples), Calabria (52 examples) and Salento (200 examples) stems from contemporaneous texts. The much larger corpus of Neapolitan (462 examples) ranges from the 14th century to the present day. The corpus is based on individual readings of texts; the bibliography is listed under sources. The reading and compilation of examples was carried out by Adam Ledgeway (2000-2017), who analysed the examples in several publications regarding features such as adverbial agreement. The data is not restricted to verb-modification (e.g. in Calabrese: scriva biello chiaru ‘s/he writes beautifully, clearly’), but the adjective-adverbs show different adverbial functions (e.g. focus adverbs such as Neapolitan simmo iusto quatto 'we are exactly four'). In order to integrate the examples into the aaif-database (FWF-Project “Open Access Database - Adjective-Adverb Interfaces in Romance”, ORD 66-VO), the data have been annotated by Katharina Gerhalter in 2019. In order to unify variation in different dialects and to easily enable lemma searching, the verbs and adverbs in the examples were lemmatized with the corresponding standard Italian lemma (e.g. the example scriva biello chiaru from Calabria was lemmatized as: scrivere, bello, chiaro). In cases where there was no standard Italian equivalent, a reconstructed vernacular Latin lemma was proposed, preceded by an asterisk (for example, *COMMOGLIARE for the Neapolitan verb forms accumigliateva and commoglio 'I cover'). In total, 100 different adjectival lemmata are registered (see the List of Lemmata which includes the number of examples per lemma). The corpus is composed mainly by adjective-adverbs, but also contains a few adverbial locutions (prepositional phrases of the type “preposition + adjective” such as de veru ‘really’) as well as some idiomatic reduplications of nouns, which are used adverbially (e.g. miccia miccia ‘[to burn] weak’).
