Corpus of Spanish "Verb + Adjective-Adverbs" in CDH: Sp_A_CDH

This corpus contains over 2.400 annotated examples of Spanish adjective-adverbs following a verb and covers the period from the 13th until the 21st century. All examples were extracted from the corpus nuclear of Corpus del Nuevo Diccionario Histórico del Español (=CDH) in the year 2013. As a lemmatized corpus, CDH offers specific search combinations. Despite providing a categorization of word-classes, the CDH does not systematically classify adjective-adverbs as “adverbs”. Therefore, it is not possible to simply search for justo, claro or cierto as an adverb, for example. It is necessary to read examples of the adjectives, or to search for certain combinations that favour adverbial usage, before manually classifying adverbial uses. By combining adjective-adverbs (adjectival lemmas) with the word-class verb in the CDH nuclear, we collected and tagged examples of modal adverbs, such as ver claro, pagar caro, volar alto. Only examples matching this pattern were annotated. The first term of the search combination, i.e., the one concerning the verb, was only specified for “word-class: verb”, without any lexical restriction. However, copula and pseudocopula verbs such as ser, parecer etc. have been excluded. The second term of the search combination, i.e., concerning the adverb, was lexically specified. For this purpose, the most frequent adjectives in Spanish have been selected and parsed (according to current frequency listings like those of the spoken data of C-ORAL-ROM). In total, 161 different adjectival bases were registered (see the List of Lemmata, which includes a count of tagged examples per lemma). Consequently, the corpus contains the most frequent Spanish adjectives that are (adverbially) used for verb modification with any Spanish verb except copula.
