<dc:description>Foundation ArtZuid is an initiative of a number of residents from Amsterdam South. Since 2008 we have engaged a growing number of volunteers to revive our splendid environment in an appropriate manner. We achieved this by organizing the international sculpture route ArtZuid 2009 on the Apollolaan and Minervalaan. These monumental avenues create the ideal setting to exhibit art. The sculpture route is a superb reason for a late summer stroll. besides a surprising combination of artwork, people will rediscover the beautiful vistas that architect Berlage incorporated in the city design of the southern part of Amsterdam in 1917, the so called Plan-Zuid. A walk along the central garden of Berlage's lanes is a rediscovery of the sightlines in his urban design process. In a sense we can speak of 'dormant' cultural heritage brought to life by sculptures. Initially, the visitors find themselves on a road from east to west of the city and while walking the overwhelming wide space of the lanes is there. The lanes provide a green panorama with magnificent vistas that give the sculptures meaning. </dc:description>

<dc:description>Jury Citation: "By the powerful effect of these works of art set in the magnificent green urban spaces designed by H.P. Berlage, this outdoor sculpture exhibition attracts positive attention to a major achievement of European urban planning. Carried out by an initiative of the inhabitants and supporting sponsors, ArtZuid has influenced the attitude of the authorities, attracting major public attention and thus contributing to the sustainable protection of the area. By uniting visual arts with architectural space, the project has renewed the daily living environment for the inhabitants. The jury hopes to highlight the importance of our 20th century built heritage and the decisive role which inhabitants can play in its conservation. They equally appreciated the subtle and joyous manner adopted to defend this architectural heritage."
