<dc:description>The farm was built in the late nineteenth century by the Lambton Estates. The layout and form of the farm buildings are consistent with farming practice and model farms introduced during the mid eighteenth century. The farm was acquired by Washington Development Corporation who in 1972 decided to reclaim and convert the partly derelict and dilapidated buildings for future use as a Centre for developing and encouraging art in its various forms. The Preliminary Phase started in the autumn of 1973 and included the removal of various "non original" and inconsistent outbuildings, structural and weatherproofing works, general repairs and replacements. First Phase: Conversion for office accommodation for the Arts Director, workshop-type accommodation for an architect and for a violin maker. New hard paving and landscaping to the central courtyard area and a car park. This work was completed early in 1976. The Second Phase was completed in 1977 and provided the following accommodation:
-A Theatre with retractable seating for 130 persons with associated foyer, bar, toilets, changing rooms, scenery store and film projection facilities
-An Art Gallery
-Craft Workshops including a Pottery and a public Art Studio
-Two Residential Units
-A Community Meeting Room for the Fatfield Village residents. (The Village Centre and first housing are being constructed to the East of the Arts Centre).</dc:description>
