<dc:description>Designed by Charles Barry and completed m 1858, the existing Opera House ist the third theatre on the Covent Garden Site. Originally constructed in less than twelve months, the building employed advanced Ievels of prefabricatlon and represented a leading example of the pragmatic approach adopted during the mid 1800's, to the construction of classically detailed buildings. The work undertaken at the Royal Opera House, whilst involving the conservation of important historic fabric, required a significant and carefully judged programme of work to ensure the building's continuing viability.
