<dc:description>Learning from las Cuencas provides a new perspective of mining cultural landscapes. Despite being focused on a local environment, the coal mining area of the Cuencas Mineras Centrales of Asturias, Spain, among its interests is to create a universal architectural story. This area, after undergoing an intense process of industrialisation, have changed considerably over a brief period of time. In just a few decades, what were once natural valleys with basically rural economic and social structures came to host busy urban agglomerations of unexpected density in their very heart. This has given rise to incredibly heterodox building patterns. These are hybrid architectures, mutating artefacts which, despite the invisibility of their inevitable marginality, can offer really interesting lessons in architecture today. This book was published on the occasion of the exhibition of the research project shown for the first time in Oviedo and Gijon, from 27 September 2013 to 23 February 2014.

<dc:description>Jury Citation: "The Jury were deeply impressed with this entry and its focus on a complex and disorganised landscape history. There are lessons here for many other areas of Europe which have suffered similar radical upheavals as a result of rapid and unplanned industrialisation and subsequent sharp decline. Our sense of a double loss - first, of the rural idyll, and second, of a vivid industrial prosperity - is portrayed here positively as a celebration of the richness diversity. An excellent book"
