<dc:description>In 1999 the City of Glasgow hosted a year long Festival of Architecture and Design. As a permanent legacy of this festival the city decided to construct a "Centre of Architecture, Design and the City" to be known as the Lighthouse. The former Glasgow Herald property had lain empty and in poor condition since 1980 and the opportunity was taken to bring new life to the building and the surrounding areas of the city by establishing the project on this location. An architectural competition was held in 1997 and a design proposed by the Glasgow practice "Page & Park Architects" was chosen. The project comprises a restoration of the original building and the additional of a new extension building to the rear to form a new public building containing exhibition spaces, conference spaces, education facilities, cafe/restaurant etc. The building has been open since July 1999 and visitor numbers have exceeded original estimates.</dc:description>
